VIEW ON OLD CHURCHES

BY MOBELLINO TEAM

[EN] The Orthodox Church on the Hill, dedicated to Holy Trinity is the first orthodox church of Cluj, built between 1795-1796 in baroque style. The church is situated at nr. 12, in a picturesque garden, between the graves of an old Orthodox cemetery. Following Josephine edicts of religious tolerance, in the last decades of the eighteenth century, in Cluj were located many Romanian, Macedo-Romanian and Greek merchants coming from Brasov, which led to the strengthening of the Orthodox community. In 1788 merchants Ioan Constantin and Ienache Mavrodin sent a request to the mayor to approve the construction of a church.

[EN] On 6 April 1789 the city council rejected the request, arguing that the Edicts provide approval of building a church only for communities that are at least 100 families of believers. Through a new request to the Chancellery in Vienna, they requested approval for the Orthodox community to build a church outside the city walls. On 14 February 1780 Vienna Office approved the request and issued the building permit. Construction began in 1795 and lasted until 1796. Mural painting of the interior is of recent date.

In order to avoid degradation of the humps, please do not climb on their slopes!

1. Description: The Nature Reserve Fânaţele Clujului is located 6 km North from the city Cluj-Napoca, at the western boundary of the so called Transylvanian Plain (Câmpia Transilvaniei). It was founded in 1932 as a botanical reserve. The most simple way to get there is a road that starts near Real hypermarket, in Iris neighborhood. The street begins near the intersection of Oasului Street with Muncii Boulevard it climbs Gella Hill (505 m) through the orchards, then descend into the Valea Calda Valley. From the crest of the hill we can enjoy an unusual sight: the view of almost the entire city to south and on the other side the humps (called also coffins) on the southern slope of Bogomaia Hill. Designation of protected area was determined by the existence of islands of rare and protected xerophyte plant species. Thanks to Professor Alexandru Borza, 7.5 ha of meadow have been designated as protected area since 1925, in 1932 gaining this status by law. At that time only the Glimeea Mare (Large Hump) and surroundings were the protected area, the area was fenced to protect it from damage caused by animals and humans, there were also warning signs and even had a paid security guard. Landslides can be found in our days, as well as erosion of humps.

2. What is geomorphology: Geomorphology is part of the geographical sciences. It is the science that deals with the study of Earth's surface forms the genesis and evolution of the relief laws in all its complexity. Geomorphology notion comes from the Greek words ge = earth, morph = shape and logos = study. It was first used in 1854 by German K. Fr. Neumann. Land relief is all roughness and inequalities of Earth's outside crust. The concept of land relief or terrain comes from the Latin word "levo-relevo" = to rise. We use the notion of land relief when we refer to a very small area of Earth crust or when it comes to Earth in general, the shape of the geoid or topography contrast between the continents and the bottom of the ocean. Basic concepts used in geomorphology are the landforms and types of surface relief. Form of relief is a simple or complex geometric configuration of a portion of the earth's surface whose unity resulting from common genesis of its component parts. Every form of relief surface is composed of very varied terrain and tilt tension.

3. Geomorphology of Cluj humps: Fânatele Natural Reserve has specific geomorphological features. It is a strange, uneven terrain, formed by landslides. According to geomorpho-logical studies, they were formed this way: the upper layers of sand have left the water to seep under them to lower layers of clay (which rejected the water, making it slippery), allowing the top layer of sand to move toward valley. This land is covered with bumps called "coffins" (coparsaie) by locals. These geomorphologic structures are typical for the area around Cluj, and landslides are most often encountered at Fânaţele Cluj. There are so characteristic that the founder of Transylvanian geology, Ph.D. Professor Jenő Cholnoky, studied in this area all these humps. "Coffins" on Fânaţele Cluj are oriented on an axis from east to west. Southern slopes are warmed by the sun and are steeper, they host steppe feather grass communities and xerophyte shrub. On the southern slope of the so-called Big Hump where arid conditions have formed a warm microclimate, lives a pioneer type of vegetation, resistant to arid conditions characteristic to semi-desert conditions. This is a low vegetation coverage, and there are still areas where erosion phenomena are active. In the recesses between humps appeared temporary or permanent ponds. Water in these ponds is a little salted, the salt being diluted between layers of clay.

4. Fânaţele's Geobotany: Fânaţele Clujului is one of the most interesting botanical reservations, with an extremely diverse flora. Here there are over 450 species of plants of the steppe. The reserve Fânaţele Clujului - Coffins area were identified two types of vegetation, depending on the orientation imposed by the environment slopes. A xerophile vegetation - with the predominance of feather grasses (Stipa lessingiana, Stipapulcherimma and Stipa capillata) - is installed on the south side, with a fluid exceed that falls below 100mm/year. On the shady northern slope, where evaporation decreases and the amount of precipitation is more significant, thus excess fluid is higher, is a microclimate that favored the installation of a well knit type mesophilic vegetation, with robust herbs mixed with trees and shrubs and with characteristic plants and forest clearings of the forest: European Cornel (Cornus mas), elderberry (Sambucus nigra), hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna), dog rose (Rosa canina), blackthorn (Prunus spinosa), tendril (Clematis vitalba), etc. An important role in differentiating the vegetation cover have the microclimatic factors, which led to the individualization of an atypical mesh of steppe vegetation, on southern slopes of the humps, enjoying a climate that allowed the preservation of relics from the xerothermic Post-Glacial times. (Source: Florentis)

5. Zoogeography of the area: Cluj Fânaţele's territory is crossed by the worldwide spread limits of two species : here is the southern boundary of the Moor Frog (Rana arvalis) and south-eastern limit of the Willow Warbler (Phylloscopus trochilus). In recent decades new species have been colonized, and most commonly Fallow Deer (Dama dama) and Pheasant (Phasianus sp.). Extreme winter of 1954, with very high snow cover (4-6 meters in some places) has led to the extinction of numerous specimens of wild ducks and geese, rabbits, wild boars. In Fânaţele Clujului Reserve lives a single species of meadow viper (Vipera ursinii rakosiensis). Currently, according to research, there is a population consisting of 93 vipers. They are highly sought by poachers, but the area still has an advantage in terms of its isolation and its poor publicity. Let us hope that poaching will disappear due the protection of this area, and steps will be taken to conserve unique or very rare stationed species of flora and fauna in these places. (Source: Florentis).
